Under the supervision of the Assistant Library Director perform a variety of standard library and clerical duties to assist patrons; assist in locating materials and demonstrate proper use of reference materials; assist in the circulation and return of library books and other materials. Perform designated non-patron involved tasks related to providing library services as described in essential job functions.
Perform a variety of standard library and clerical duties to assist patrons; provide information and explain library procedures and policies, assist in locating and gathering materials and demonstrate proper use of reference materials; assist patrons with the use of various machines.
Assist patrons at counter area; answer inquiries and routine questions and provide information; direct or refer patrons to appropriate library personnel as necessary to answer more technical questions; answer telephone inquiries and transfer calls as required.
Perform routine circulation desk duties including but not limited to, checking books and materials in and out, preparing and maintaining library files, issuing and renewing library cards according to established guidelines, collecting fees, fines and service charges, supervising public computers, processing periodicals, and opening and closing procedures.
Shelve library materials including books, DVDs, CDs and audio books.
Process new books and audio visual materials.
Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, filing and operating a variety of equipment including copier, fax, laminating machine, printer, scanner, and computer.
Monitor patron activities to assure proper library conduct.
Attend work on a regular and dependable basis. Due to the nature of this position, actual presence on the job during work hours is mandatory.
Interact in a professional and respectful manner with City staff, officials, other agencies, and the public.
Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Education: High school graduate
Experience: Two years of general clerical experience including some customer service or library experience.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications may be considered as an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of –
Standard library functions, methods and organization; library practices, policies, procedures and terminology; Dewey Decimal system of classification; basic reference and bibliographic tools, techniques and procedures; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; telephone techniques and etiquette.
Ability to –
Provide information to patrons in a tactful and courteous manner; assist patrons in locating and utilizing library materials; perform general library duties related to the processing and circulation of library materials; learn library practices and procedures and equipment; learn the location of books, periodicals and other materials in the library, perform routine clerical work; work cooperatively with others, communicate effectively both orally and in writing; monitor and maintain acceptable patron behavior in the library.
Majority of work is performed in an office setting that is busy, oriented to public service and subject to constant work interruptions. Employee may work under the stress of continual public and/or inter-departmental contact and pressure to meet timelines. Walking, sitting, standing, bending and reaching is required. Employee may be required to push, pull, lift and/or carry objects up to 10 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job in an office setting include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet. Some local traveling may be required. Exposure to adverse weather conditions is minimal.
